How To Use Your Mask – (A Powerful Spiritual Practice)

Kangyur Rinpoche.

With millions of us choosing or required to wear masks, as a result of our desire not to transmit or receive the coronavirus, it occurred to me that we could transform this healthy daily habit into an amazing spiritual practice.

With only our eyes visible, much information usually transmitted with our facial expressions is missed. While at first, this would seem to create a diminishment in our usual ability to discern emotion and intention, in fact, this new reality is more than compensated as it emphasizes and brings forth the amazing communication power of our eyes. With awareness, we notice that we are more focused on eye contact or lack thereof than ever and, when we understand the power of the eyes to transmit compassion, love, and kindness, we realize that we are in possession of an amazing, world-changing tool. Covering our lower face with a mask gives us a wonderful and unique opportunity to initiate an extraordinary action practice.

There could never be a better time for us to connect our eyes to our hearts as we go through the world, sharing love and care in this innocent yet sublime manner. Right now, with so many of us living in fear and uncertainty, we can use this practice to communicate the counter force of compassion, empathy, and love. Some time ago I wrote here about how to adopt this amazing practice in a post called Action – The Eyes Have It.  You can link to it here. Once you learn it, you can join those who practice love as a subversive activity, subtly and powerfully changing the world around them. I guarantee you will find amazement and a greater opening of your heart. Make your mask an ally in creating positive change!
